Peter Pan (2014) Custom Electronics, AstroTurf
"‘Peter Pan’ alludes to J.M. Barrie's idealized world of childhood. Specifically, the detachment of Peter’s shadow, as it is freed from its source object (Peter). His shadow turns avatar and sheds light on youthfulness and the process of growing up. A shadow suggests a darkness that results from the absence of light, and it is the light in Barrie’s narrative that brings Peter’s shadow to life. This piece emphasizes such human connections, as our children of current generation are growing up digitally native to the mediated glow of our virtual landscapes."
When interacting with the work, the viewer is captured within a ring of procedurally controlled lights that activate their shadow. The lights are responding to data transcoded from the original stage play.
